Triathlon Swimming

A great article was published in the Physician and Sports medicine, January 2003 issue. The title is Swimming Biomechanics and Injury Prevention- New stroke techniques and medical considerations. This information can help swimming coaches, competitive swimmers and those competing in triathlons. In the section "Evaluating the Injury" I would like to add a Biomechanical Joint Examination, which should only be done by a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician. This examination not only takes into consideration a complete neck and shoulder neurological and pathological exam but includes examination of muscle and joint biomechanics in the whole kinematic chain as well as address muscle imbalances and tendonitis problems. This specialized exam includes checking for joint fixations of the cervical and thoracic spine, ribs, A-C and glenohumeral joint, muscle imbalances, tendonitis in the rotator cuff and primary shoulder muscles and checking the rest of the shoulder kinematic chain. Armed with the information in this article and the information and treatment that can be provided by a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician there is absolutely no reason why swimmers can't perform pain free and more efficiently.
